Sample Poem (p. 7):

Song before Sunrise

Alone, hidden in foggy gloom,
a voice whistles, chatters, and slides
spring music into my bedroom.
Heedless of darkness on all sides
the merry singer pipes his song
across the frozen fields and lanes
from which the echoes, while less strong,
sneak through the frosty windowpanes.
The tune won't scare an owl in wait,
and though it's never guaranteed
to best rivals or win a mate,
it fills an ancient, inborn need.
Perhaps I shall not ever see
this redbird chant his joyous tones;
but as he sings them fearlessly,
I feel the song deep in my bones.
